The first few weeks of school are crucial in setting up learning routines & promoting comfort in one’s academic space. Is your child struggling with adjusting to the demands of the classroom?
Our specialized therapy targets the vestibular system and executive function, the brain’s “air traffic control center” that directs tasks from initiation to completion.
The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, helps with awareness of body in space. An out-of-whack vestibular system can contribute to issues with vision, focus, task completion, balance, and regulation.
Signs you might need an OT evaluation at Sunny Day Therapy include:
Difficulty starting or finishing tasks
Difficulty sustaining attention
Difficulty following multi-step directions
Periods of irritability
Difficulty with sleep
Poor self-confidence
Difficulty finding and participating in leisure or social activities
Lack of lifestyle balance
Sensory sensitivity
Difficulty sitting still for academic work
Sensory seeking behaviors interfering with daily task completion
Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or overly stimulated by certain sensory input or environments
Difficulty with emotional regulation – anger, fatigue, sadness, difficulty organizing or composing accurate thoughts
Body awareness concerns- crashing into objects, not noticing body’s needs, constant spinning etc.
Those with certain conditions such as ASD & ADHD are more at risk to struggle with vestibular issues; however, sensory integration concerns can also exist on their own especially during times of change or dysregulation of mind & body. Even adults may exhibit symptoms— especially those going through something such as perinatal people just before and after birth are at risk for executive function challenges.
