Imaginative play opens up the mind to exploring problem solving, dancing through possibilities, embracing creativity, & practicing courage. Plato once said, “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”
Play is shared experience in which the therapist and child build a rapport that encourages openness and communication. The word communication comes from the latin word root for “sharing.” Helping kids build back and forth communication involves first developing a trusting relationship with the child. Through play, the child and the therapist enter comfort zones about the child’s interests. This client-centered comfort zone is a safe space for helping the child take safe risks, explore, and try out new behaviors. From physical strengthening to trying new foods to practicing meeting a friend during the context of play a client can explore and discover. Before we address/discuss mental issues, kids need to have their physical self-regulation needs met.
Some children are more sensitive to sensory input; they may have a more narrow comfort zone. As an occupational therapist with specialty training in sensory integration, I can help you learn about your child’s preferred sensory patterns and how to set up activities tailored to your child’s interests and environments that nurture your child’s strengths.
So what would you like for your child to explore? Occupational therapy will open up the doors to your child discovering their inner scientist, cowboy, or explorer. Not sure where to begin? An assessment can determine if your child is behind on motor milestones, has sensory issues, feeding issues, executive functioning concerns, or social issues! Call 859-339-4235 or email kim@beeweellot.com for their story of growth to begin.
