Being human is hard these days. Our news is filled with stories of catastrophes, tragedies, and terror. Technology is quick to bring us news of the latest disaster. Most animals don’t spend time reflecting and ruminating over what could have been and what could be. We humans have stress not only about what is actually happening but about possibilities. Why can’t we just be like lions – fully in the hunt but also resting fully?
In today’s modern world realized fears have a slim chance of actual causing us the damage we fear; this is not the jungle. We are not in danger of being eaten alive. What actual can hurt us over time is the impact of stress and constant worry.
I want to say I am done with fear and with being worried: “I ain’t afraid of nothing.” Yet, I am only human. That fearless person is just not me. Courage is action in spite of fear not in the absence of fear. I rest my fear at the feet of Jesus knowing that although I am afraid there is someone who is stronger than all my fears and always with me. “God is bigger than the boogey man.”
Imperfection, fear, chaos. That’s just part of this world. Without these darknesses, there would be no understanding of the opposites: victory, triumph, and light.
As Stephen Hawking says, “Without imperfection, neither you nor I would exist.”
Someday, there will be a world in which different laws of nature exist – where the bad doesn’t have to be intertwined with the good. But for now, this is all we know and the only way we can understand good is by living through the bad. Entropy is the law of our land.
There is something beautiful about worshiping, praying, and submitting in the presence of struggle. It is in our grief, our pain, and our fear that we can truly submit and earnestly supplicate! May we come out of every trial fully refreshed and sharpened. May we be refined by the fire and fully attune to the wisdom, kindness, and healing of God. Even though we can’t see now the seeds that are growing in this hard soil, we know that God glory shines through weak vessels. We emerge from every difficulty with a power, a wisdom, and a hope that we can give to others to brighten their darkest days.
