The winter holidays are my favorite time of the year, especially Christmas. With everything decorated and sparkly, it reminds me to foster my spirits of reflection, curiosity, and surprise. I take time to slow down and consider the sacred – The Christmas story, gratitude and love for family/friends, silly toys and corny movies! I am blessed with the gift of time – the possibility to lose myself in a book, to start a new TV series, to go shopping. The options seem endless and I am excited. I am filled with anticipation for this time of the year – for the comforting rituals, the familiar songs, the homemade meals with quality time with family. These times are just special!
Yet, I am realizing that these times do not have to come with structured holidays. We can create structure in our lives for adventures, for celebrations, for fun! One of my new years resolutions is to set aside a time each week for the sacred – a time to feel whimsy, creativity, and the beauty/glory of the Christmas story. It is a time that I will look forward to each week. I may also even plan some new holidays/traditions of my own this year. Perhaps the first of every month will be a day to celebrate? I resolve to plan more vacations, more stay-cations (unplanned time!), and more me time! I aim to spend more time unplugged from my phone an email and more time plugged into being mindful to the beauty of family and friends around me. I will not only find space for the sacred; I will create space and structure for the sacred this year!
