Often, I feel that my very ideas about the nature of God and the world can be confining. The questions that I ask or my fears put God in a box. I wonder how can people support such atrocious ideas and proclaim to be Christians when the very theme of Christianity is radical love? When I have these doubts and fears, I must remember that I am not God. I must put my problems in context and learn to look at them from different angles. I must not be afraid to ask others for help because they have been given gifts and ways of looking at problems that I may not have.
I believe that being humble is one of the most important aspects serving others and loving mankind. To me, it’s more than just about loving, serving, and respecting others; recognizing my own humanity and tendency to jump to conclusions is a very act of worshipping God. God is omnipotent, and I fall prostrate at God’s feet.
As if I could put God in a box! (When I “put God in a box with my ideas,” really I am the only one in the box!) I have to believe that God is bigger than conflicting ideas, war, greed, pride, and power. To think that God and science are opposite belief systems is simplistic and even demeaning to God. I believe God can operate within and through the entropy of our current world; God is a transformative and game changing God who works together “for the good of all” despite the negativity within the world. This does not excuse sin or lack of critical thought. I believe that it is my duty as a human to use “my sound mind” (some would question this, ha) and heart to question everything and not to be afraid of conflicting ideas. Abraham Lincoln used to surround himself with those of opposite beliefs because it made him stronger and helped his decision making to consider alternative viewpoints.
I want a world where opposing viewpoints are welcomed and people acknowledge their imperfections and need for each other. Wouldn’t the world be boring if we were all the same? I believe each of us was made in the image of God and has a different light to shine to the world. Perhaps God is a prism and we are all looking at different sides of God which are made manifest in the beauty of nature and humanity? During times of conflict, let us all remember the needs and values that link us all together in the circle of life; no matter where we live, what we look like, and what cultural systems we operate within, most of us want to leave the world better than we found it. We want to help those around us; we want to end hunger and sickness and to spread love and laughter.
Here are some beautiful quotes which inspire me to be humble:
“Bittersweet and strange, finding you can change, knowing you were wrong.” – Beauty and the Beast
“You think you own whatever land you land on The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
“You’ll learn things you never knew, you never knew
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind
Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sun sweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they’re worth
The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends” – Pocahontas
“A mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work if it is not open.” – Frank Zappa
“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” – C.S. Lewis
“It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.”
― Mahatma Gandhi
“A true genius admits that he/she knows nothing.”
― Albert Einstein
